Moeblob Rio was offputting and unpleasant for Akira to talk to. Actual Rio is so, so much better and he likes her a lot even if she doesn't like her.

After the mirror incident, the two of them perhaps know more about each other than they should, but Akira feels like they both have a similar attitude towards it. He'll bring things up with her directly when he's drunk and no one can hear anything over Terry's rendition of Rolling Girl, but he tries to respectfully keep her secrets otherwise, because he would want the same thing done for him. She's fighting hard not to be a victim of her impossible situation and trying to maintain her morality — which is exactly the kind of thing that makes Akira decide he will fight for her, or alongside her since she is perfectly capable of fighting for herself.

He's probably more attached to her than she is to him, and he accepts this, but he's hoping to try and change that.
